Plant More Trees

We need to plant more trees in the landscape. Recent studies show that one third of all forested areas have been logged for lumber, grazing and crop production in the last fifty years to sustain our over population.

Trees cool down the earth’s surface to help control climate change. If properly placed around our homes they can save us valuable energy dollars. A properly placed Evergreen screen of trees to the north and northwest side of our home will deflect cold winter winds and can substantially cut heating costs. Deciduous trees planted to the south and southwest side of the house will cool our home in the heat of the summer and cut cooling costs. In the winter, when these trees loose their leaves, they will let valuable low angle sun into the house and once again, cut heating costs.

Rather then planting one or two trees in the landscape, plant a group of many different varieties of trees. Trees look better when planted in groups and will stay healthier grown as a community of plants rather then one isolated specimen.

Plant affordable sized trees. If many trees are required, plant five to eight foot trees. This size will establish quicker, require less care and maintenance and are easier to handle.

Plant a wide variety of trees. Native Oaks, Maples, Hickories, Birch, Spruce, Gum, Beech and Pines will all work well together. Some trees are more tolerant to extremely wet and drier soils, so it’s important to know the soil before planting. The proper plant installed in the right location will save a lot of frustration.

Wildlife depends on these trees for survival. These native trees are a valuable food source for birds and mammals; they also act as a cover during foul weather. So get your butt out there this fall and plant some trees! It’s a simple way to save energy, get some exercise, add value to your home and help sustain a healthier outdoor environment
